Adding Kaltura Assignments in Canvas

How to make a Kaltura assignment and how to turn in a Kaltura video.

In this article, we will explain how to create an assignment that uses Kaltura as a tool to upload a video. Then, we will show how students can upload their Kaltura videos to the assignment for submission.

Making the assignment

1. Click in the +Assignment button located in the  assignment page in Canvas

to get there you need to navigate to your course, then to the assignments tab. there you should see the "+Assignment" button

 

2. Change the settings of the assignment at follows

Once the new tab is open navigate to the settings of the assignment and scroll down till you see the "Submission Type" options. Here you want to mark "text entry" as the only available submission type. You do this by making sure is the only option with a check mark next to it.

3. Save it

Once you have set up your assignment as described you are ready to save it and publish it. Students would have to follow the next set of steps in order to embed their Kaltura assignment to their submission. 

 

Uploading your assignment

1. Open the external tools menu

First navigate to your assignment. If its setup properly you should see a rich text editor and nothing else as part of your submission. Here You should click in the tools menu (the one that looks like an electrical plug).

2. Select Kaltura Embed

Once the menu open, if you have done this in the past you will your recently selected tools. If you see Kaltura Embed already you can just select it and move on to the next step. Otherwise click on "view all" and look up for the Kaltura Embed option by scrolling onto it or by looking it up in the search bar.

3. Embed your video to the assignment

After having clicked in the Kaltura embed tool a new menu opens showing your Kaltura recordings. In this new menu you can select select what videos you want to add to your assignment by clicking the "Embed" button.

In the case that it is your first time doing this, Canvas will ask for permission to see your recordings, just click accept.

If you do not see any videos, or you want to record your assignment you can click the "express capture" button. This will initiate Kaltura's recording system for you to record your assignment. Notice, after you have recorded your assignment you still need to embed it to the assignment submission box or else it will not show to your professor.

4. Submit

After you have embedded your Kaltura video you can keep following the same process to add as menu videos needed for the assignment and once you are done you can click the submit button at the bottom of the page.
