One important Canvas concept to understand is the difference between Pages and Modules. This article discusses both Page and Modules and outlines use cases for each.
A Page is where you create and present information. Think of a Page as a digital handout or information screen. You might use a Page for welcome information, instructions, policies, background information, images, links, or other content students need to read or reference.
Use a Page when your goal is to present information. Pages are appropriate for:
- Welcome messages
- Course or program instructions
- Policies and procedures
- Background or reference information
- Lesson content
- Lists of links or resources
A Module, on the other hand, is a container that organizes content. Modules help you arrange Pages, assignments, discussions, quizzes, files, and other activities into a sequence or structure that makes sense for students. The type of activity within the module can be identified by its icon, located on the left of the activity name. Modules are similar to sections and subsections in Moodle.
Use a Module when your goal is to organize content or guide students through a process. Modules are appropriate for:
- Organizing content by topic, week, or unit
- Creating a recommended sequence
- Grouping related materials together
- Showing students what to do first, next, and last
- Combining different types of Canvas content in one area
