Transition Gmail to Microsoft Office 365 FAQ

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions you may have about the transition from Gmail to Office 365.


What is the benefit of this transition?

Utilizing Office 365 as a single unified email and calendaring platform allows easy access and integration with Office 365 products. File-sharing and collaboration between supervisors and student employees, as well as professors and students, will be simplified. Elon will also be able to offer students a better user experience and familiarity with Office 365 products that have real-world applications. Office 365 also enhances our security protection from threats to data and information (such as phishing attempts).

Why is this happening now?

Transitioning during the school year gives students an opportunity to access helpful resources and training on campus and allows Elon to have increased security protection against threats to our data and information.

Who is affected by this transition?

All active, enrolled students (including undergraduate and graduate students) who will graduate in May 2022 or later.

Will my email address change?

No, your email address will not change - your email address will still be

When will the transition take place?

This change will happen in stages over mid-March.

Graduate (non-law) students will transition March 10-11.

Undergraduate sophomores and juniors transition March 14-17.

Law students will transition March 21-25.

Will I lose past Gmail emails and files saved to Google Drive?   

No, you will NOT lose access to any emails or files. Existing emails, contacts and calendar events will be migrated to Office 365, and you will still have access to utilize G Suite programs, including saved files in Google Drive. If you need to access saved documents or projects, simply login to the G Suite Dashboard and select Google Drive. However, to send and receive email, you must return to Office 365

How will I access my email in Office 365?  

Once your email account has been migrated, you will log in via to access your new Outlook email account and other Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams. If you previously added your email account to mobile devices using Android or iOS email apps, you must remove the account and re-add it as an Office 365 account or download Microsoft’s Outlook app instead. Visit the Office 365 for Students Guide for step-by-step instructions.
