Set Up Cisco Jabber

Cisco Jabber is a collaboration tool that can allow users to work remotely and still have the benefit of their desk phone. Below are instructions on how to download and install the Cisco Jabber client.

  • If you are not on campus, make sure you connect to VPN on your computer while using Jabber (see Related Articles for more info). ERP Off Campus and general VPN connections work equally well for this.
  • In order to use Jabber, you must submit a request to have it enabled for your account. If you do not submit a request, the client will not work for you.

If you run into any issues, please report an issue or contact the Service Desk.

Instructions

  1. Follow one of the links below to download the Mac or PC client. Enter your Elon credentials (the same ones you use for your Elon email account) in order to download the files.
  2. Once downloaded, unzip the file in a location of your choice.
    • PC - right click the unzipped file and choose "Run as Administrator" from the menu
    • Mac - install the package file
  3. Accept any errors you receive.
  4. Once installed, open the Jabber client. Enter your Elon user name (username@elon.edu) and password.
  5. Click continue. At this point, you should be logged into jabber.
    • If you are asked for your user name and/or password a second time, please enter it.
    • If you are asked about a certificate, click accept.
  6. Make a test call to your Jabber client.
    • You can use your cell phone to make a test call - just dial your extension as if you were off campus (336-278-xxxx).
    • We can also arrange a test call with you, just submit a request.
  7. Make a test call from your Jabber client.
    • Open the dial-pad of your Jabber client and dial as if you were using a desk phone, using a 4-digit campus extension or 8-1-(area code)-(phone number).
  8. If you are having trouble with your jabber install you can reset it by using the "Reset Jabber" link on the login screen. This will reset the client to default settings and allow you to enter your user name and password again and set it up from scratch.

*Future log ins may require the username without @elon.edu.

After logging in, you will see your extension at the bottom of the client. Clicking the arrow next to it will give you some options, so go ahead and explore those. Jabber is basically a "soft phone" and should have a lot of the same functionality as your desk phone.
