Respondus for Faculty

Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) is piloting a product called Respondus - a lockdown browser application that disables multiple computer features while students are taking exams in Moodle. When Respondus is used during a Moodle exam, students will be unable to navigate out of Moodle or open additional applications such as Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word. They also cannot print or take screenshots of the exam. For more details, view a full list of features on the Respondus website.

If you are interested in using Respondus with your Moodle exams and quizzes, please contact Teaching and Learning Technologies at tlt@elon.edu.

How to Get Started using Respondus with Moodle exams and quizzes

  1. Having all of your exams and quizzes in Moodle is the first step to using Respondus as Respondus only works with exams and quizzes in Moodle. If you do not currently have your exams and quizzes in Moodle, view a full list of knowledge base articles about Moodle quizzes here.
  2. Determine the Moodle courses where you would like to use Respondus and add the Respondus block to each course. Directions on how to add the block to your course are below.
  3. Add information into your syllabus about using Respondus as students will need to bring their personal laptop to class on exam days or check one out from Media Services, which is located in Belk Library. Recommended syllabus language can be found below.
  4. Send your students the Respondus download link. Students will need to download Respondus onto their personal laptops prior to the first exam.
  5. Create a mock Moodle exam. We highly recommend you create a mock exam in Moodle for students to test using Respondus. This allows students to confirm that they have downloaded Respondus and that it is working properly prior to a high stakes exam.
  6. When you are ready to use Respondus in Moodle, you will need to access the Respondus dashboard via the Respondus block in your Moodle course. Within the Respondus dashboard, you are able to indicate which exams and quizzes will be administered with Respondus LockDown Browser. You can refer to the Instructor Quick Start Guide which will walk you through how to indicate which exam and quiz will be a Respondus exam or quiz.

Important Information about Respondus

Please note that students will never need to manually open Respondus on their personal laptops. Instead, students will log into Moodle and access their Moodle exam. Through the Moodle exam, Respondus will launch.

Recommended language about Respondus for your course syllabus

The language below can be found on the Respondus resources website.

The sample text below can be used in your course or syllabus. It explains that students must use LockDown Browser for their online tests.

Using LockDown Browser for Online Exams

This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the optional webcam feature (which may be required for some exams).

Then download and install LockDown Browser from this link.

To Take a Moodle Test in Respondus LockDown Browser

  1. Close all programs, unless one is used to connect you to the Internet.
  2. Log into Moodle with a regular browser, select the course and navigate to the quiz.
  3. From this screen, you can either select install LockDown Browser or launch it to take the quiz.
    • If the computer already has LockDown Browser installed, simply click the “Launch LockDown Browser” button.
    • If the computer does not have LockDown Browser installed, this link will enable you to install LockDown Browser to the computer.
  4. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging), choose Yes.
  5. If you are required to use a webcam to record yourself during a test, a Startup Sequence will guide you through a webcam check and other items required by the instructor.
  6. Once a quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit the quiz until the Submit Quiz button is clicked.

For additional details on using LockDown Browser, review this Student Quick Start Guide (PDF).

Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

  • Select a location where you won't be interrupted
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc. and don't have them within reach
  • Clear your area of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted
