Live Captioning through Microsoft Teams

Summary

Learn how to enable live captioning (real-time subtitles) for your meetings in Microsoft Teams.

Body

Live captions are real-time subtitles generated during a virtual meeting or event. This allows anyone with a different proficiency level of the language, trouble with hearing, or even someone in a loud area to have another way to follow along while the meeting is happening. Microsoft Teams allows participants to turn on live captions for any video meeting.

Turn on and off Live Captions

Whether you are using Teams for the web or the app, live captioning is available. To turn on live captioning during a meeting, go to your meeting controls  (three dots) in the meeting toolbar and select Language and speech > Turn on live captions. (Turn off live captions)

Note: People can choose not to be identified in captions.  For details, see Hide your Identity in meeting captions and transcripts

Change the language of your captions

  1. Select Settings ⚙.
  2. Select Spoken language.
  3. Select the language spoken during the meeting. (This is the language of your captions and meeting transcript.)
Important: Make sure the language you select is the language everyone is speaking in the meeting.  When you change the spoken language setting, it affects everyone.  The captions and transcript language will change for all meeting participants.

Keep in Mind

  • In Microsoft Teams, the use of live captions is driven by each individual participant. In other words, meeting hosts cannot turn on live captions for all participants. This feature is controlled by the end user.

  • If you plan to record your Microsoft Teams meeting or event, note that live captions are not saved in the meeting recording. If you'd like a transcript of the meeting, turn on transcription. Meeting transcripts are available after the meeting.
