Moodle Roles and Basic Permissions

Summary

This article lists the roles a teacher can assign to participants enrolled in a Moodle course.

Body

The following roles are available within a Moodle course at Elon University. Teachers within a course can assign the following roles to enrolled individuals. Additionally, some permissions can be changed at the course level for these roles. Teachers in a Moodle course can view and change role permissions by going to Participants>Permissions.

Teacher

  • Teachers can do almost anything within a course, including adding or changing the activities and grading students.

Non-editing Teacher

  • A non-editing teacher is able within a course to view and grade students' work, but may not alter or delete any of the activities or resources.

TLA

  • A student worker can add resources and create activities in a course. A student worker cannot view student grades or activity submissions.

Student

  • A user with the Student role in Moodle can participate in course activities and view resources but not alter them or see the class gradebook. They can see their own grades if the teacher has allowed this.
