Connecting Mac Computers to Crestron AirMedia While Using Eduroam

Summary

Mac users on Eduroam may experience issues connecting to Crestron AirMedia. The fix is to update the AirPlay Receiver setting in macOS to allow AirPlay for Everyone before installing the AirMedia plugin. If the plugin was previously installed, it must be re-downloaded after making this change.

Body

Quick Steps

    • Leave the AirPlay Receiver toggle OFF.

    • Change Allow AirPlay for to Everyone.

  3. Connect to Eduroam.

  4. Download the AirMedia plugin.

    • ⚠️ If you already downloaded the plugin before making this change, re-download it.

Overview

Elon University is transitioning to Eduroam as the primary wireless network. While most devices connect without issue, Mac users may encounter problems when trying to display their screen using Crestron AirMedia.

This issue occurs because AirPlay is restricted by default on Macs connected to Eduroam. To resolve it, users must adjust their AirPlay settings before attempting to connect to an AirMedia device.

Symptoms

  • Unable to connect to Crestron AirMedia devices when on Eduroam.

  • AirMedia app installs correctly but does not display the screen.

  • AirPlay option does not appear, or the connection fails after entering the code.

Important Note

👉 Make sure to change the AirPlay setting on your Mac before connecting to AirMedia and downloading the AirMedia plugin.

  • If you have already downloaded the plugin before changing this setting, uninstall it and re-download the plugin after the setting has been updated.

Detailed Steps

Step 1: Open System Settings

  1. Click the Apple Menu  in the top-left corner of the screen.

  2. Select System Settings (called System Preferences on older versions).

Step 2: Navigate to AirDrop & Handoff

  1. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and select General.

  2. Click AirDrop & Handoff.

Step 3: Adjust AirPlay Receiver Settings

  1. Locate the AirPlay Receiver section.

  2. Keep the AirPlay Receiver toggle OFF.

    • This feature allows other Apple devices to stream to your Mac and is not required for AirMedia.

  3. In the dropdown next to Allow AirPlay for, select Everyone.

    • This is the required change for AirMedia to work correctly on Eduroam.

After Changing the Setting

  • Leave AirPlay Receiver off.

  • Connect to Eduroam.

  • Go to the AirMedia webpage for your classroom/device and download the AirMedia plugin.

  • If you previously downloaded the plugin before updating this setting, re-download the plugin to ensure proper functionality.

Notes

  • This change does not affect your security while connected to Eduroam, but it does make AirPlay more widely available on your Mac.

  • If preferred, you can enable this setting only while using AirMedia and then return it to a more restrictive option afterwards.

  • Windows and iOS devices are not affected by this issue.

Need Help?
