Overview
For Elon University items, OneDrive should always be your primary backup method because it provides secure cloud storage, automatic syncing, and easy access across devices.
If you would like to back up your files—including music, videos, or pictures—on a Windows or Mac computer, please follow the steps below.
Windows Computer- Manually Copy Files to an External Hard Drive
- Connect your external drive (USB, external HDD/SSD).
- Press
Win + E to open File Explorer.
- Under "This PC" - Navigate to Each Folder:
- Documents:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Documents
- Desktop:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Desktop
- Pictures:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Pictures
- Music:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Music
- Videos:
C:\Users\[YourName]\Videos
- Select the files/folders you want to back up.
- Right-click → Copy, then go to your external drive and Paste.

Handy Hint
- For backups of individual files, network storage, a jump drive, or CDs are appropriate.
- For full backups of all of your computer data, we encourage the use of an external hard drive.

Warning
After completing these steps, remove your storage media and keep it in a safe and separate location away from your computer.
Mac Computer- Manually Copy Files to an External Hard Drive
1. Connect your external hard drive.
- Plug the drive into your Mac’s USB, USB‑C, or Thunderbolt port.
2. Find the files you want to back up.
Common locations:
Documents for files
Music or Music app folder for songs
Pictures or Photos Library for pictures
Movies for videos
Or wherever you normally store your files
3. Copy files to the external hard drive.
Copy and Paste
- Select the files → Right-click > Copy
- Go to your external drive → Right-click > Paste
4. Eject the drive safely - Ejecting the external hard drive prevents file corruption.
When the transfer is done:
- Go to Finder sidebar → click the eject icon
- OR right‑click the drive → Eject
