Frequently Asked Questions about Student Gmail

What happens when I graduate?

Nothing. Your Gmail account is yours for life. Use it as long as you'd like.

How much storage space does my account have?

More than 7 gigabytes and counting. Google continues to add more storage space so email users can archive older messages rather than having to delete them.

Why is Elon using Google as an email service provider?

There are several reasons why Elon is using Google as an email service provider for students. First, Google's security and storage space (7 GB and counting) offerings are virtually unmatched in the industry. Also, by partnering with Google, Elon is able to provide students a full featured, Elon branded email service for life at no cost to the university. This partnership also ensures students and alumni will benefit from Google’s cutting edge research and development.

Is my information secure?

Absolutely. Just like bank and credit card websites, Gmail uses always-on HTTPS encryption to keep your mail secure, so someone sharing your favorite coffee shop's public Wi-Fi can't sneak a peek at your information.

Can I check my email while abroad?

Yes. Google is not aware of any country where Gmail cannot be accessed.

Who do I call if I have questions or need technical support?

Elon's Technology Service Desk is ready to answer your questions.

What if I already have a Gmail account?

You can keep your accounts separate, or you can forward one account to another. Keep in mind that Elon will always use your official Elon email address for campus communication.

Will I have access to the global address book?

You will be able to find the email addresses of other Elon students. To look up addresses of faculty and staff, please visit Elon's online directory. After sending an email to a particular faculty or staff member one time, gmail will auto-suggest that individual again, when you start typing their email address.

Am I held accountable to Elon's Honor Code and Acceptable Usage Policy while using Gmail and other Google Apps?

Yes. If you have any questions, please review the Honor Code and Acceptable Usage Policy web pages.

Can alumni request Elon Google accounts?

Elon Google accounts are only available for enrolled students and alumni who graduate in 2010 and in subsequent years.

How do these changes impact faculty and staff?

Faculty and staff accounts are part of Microsoft 365. Faculty and staff might be interested to know the following:

  • If you would like to have a Google account to access Google applications, you can create your own personal Google account through Google’s website. Please note that a personal Google account is not tied to your Elon account, and that at this time for technical reasons, we are unable to move individual faculty and staff accounts to Google.
  • Even though students will have access to Google Docs, the students will still receive the Microsoft Office suite for installation on their personal computers.
  • It will be easier for you to keep in touch with our alumni after they graduate. Elon’s partnership with Google ensures students will be able to use their Elon email address even after graduation.
