This article discusses best practices for creating accessible media content, such as images, video, and audio files, within your Moodle course.
Images
When you insert an image into an activity or resources using the text editor, Moodle will prompt you to add ALT text to the image. ALT text is descriptive text that conveys the meaning of the image within the context of the activity or resource, and it helps students using assistive technology understand the content of images. Keep in mind that Moodle limits ALT text to 125 characters or less. Complex images, such as charts, graphs, or images containing a lot of build-in text may require ALT text that exceeds the character limit. In these cases, you can place these longer descriptions within an image caption. In any case, if you embed text in an image, you will need to provide that same content elsewhere, either in the ALT text or in a description of the image.
To add ALT text to an image in Moodle, complete the following steps:
1. Click on the image icon in the text editor toolbar.
2. Upload the image you want to insert.
3. Enter the image's ALT text in the Describe this image for someone who cannot see it field. Change any other options you’d like.
4. Click Save Image.
If the image is purely decorative, such as an icon or header image that provides no content, you can click This image is decorative only. Screen readers will skip over this image.
If you drag your image into the text editor or directly onto your course page, you will need to edit it to add ALT text. In the text editor, Moodle leaves the ALT text completely empty. On the course page, Moodle adds the name of the file to the ALT text.
Videos
All videos embedded in your Moodle course should have the option for captions to be turned on. Videos uploaded to the Kaltura media space will have captions and a transcript automatically generated. These captions/transcripts can be edited for accuracy within the Kaltura media space.
Audio Files
Any audio files in Moodle should have transcripts included. Audio-only files can be created in or uploaded to Kaltura, which will automatically generate a transcript. Transcripts can be edited for accuracy in the Kaltura media space.
