Connect to a Web Space through SFTP

Summary

Discusses how to connect to personal websites via SFTP.

Body

If you have a website hosted on facstaff.elon.edu, student.elon.edu, or org.elon.edu, you must connect to your web space using SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).

If you are on campus, you must be connected to the internet via ethernet or via the elonu-secure secure wireless network in order to access files. If you are off campus, you must first connect to the Elon network via Off-Campus VPN in order to access files.

Connection Settings

Use the following settings within your SFTP client to access your personal website files:

  • Hostname/server: facstaff.elon.edu or student.elon.edu or org.elon.edu
  • Port: 22
  • Protocol: SFTP/SSH
  • Username: Elon email username (without @elon.edu)
  • Password: Password of the account (same as email, Moodle, etc.)

SFTP Clients

Using an SFTP client will allow you to upload, access, and download files on your website. Examples of SFTP clients include WinSCP (Win), Fetch (macOS), and Cyberduck (Win, macOS). Some web editors such as Adobe Dreamweaver can also connect to SFTP.

Be careful when downloading and installing free programs from the Web. Read the complete text, especially any checkboxes that may give sites permission to download and install other programs (like adware) that can be difficult to remove.
