How to use your canvas Sandbox to prepare future courses

The procedure we are going to import an already existing course or start from scratch. Once we have finish our work on the class we are going to save it by exporting it into a file we can save in our computer, then resetting the sandbox in order to start a new course. Using this method means that to change content in the same course you would need to import it back into the empty sandbox, edit, and export it into a new file. File management is important! Losing a file could mean losing all the progress done in a course with all its contents. It is suggested to save the exported files into a classes folder and renaming them appropriately to the class they are meant to represent.

Once in the Sandbox from the settings (1) the process goes, reset sandbox (c) > import course (a) > edit course > export course (b) (to save progress). Notice you do this for every course you wan to work on and the content in the sandbox will remain on it indefinitely until you reset it, so there is no need to do it all in one sitting.

Resetting Sandbox

Notice: it is advice to export the content before resetting. Resetting will delete everything inside the Sandbox, so progress can be lost if not saved previously.

On your sandbox in the settings menu click on Reset Course content (C) (Go to the sandbox > settings > Reset Course Content)

lastly click on the big red button saying Reset Course Content (1) that appears in the pop up window.

Import Content If needed

On your sandbox in the settings menu click on Import Course Content (a) (Go to the sandbox > settings > Import Course Content)

Click on the down arrow below select content type (1). If you are importing a canvas course choose (1.a) Canvas course export package, and if you are importing a saved course from Moodle then select (1.b)

Under the source section (2) click on choose a file then select the course file from your computer. This would be the file of the course you want to edit. Then just scroll down to the end and click on add to import Queue (3). Then wait until the course is fully loaded in! it needs to say completed.

Export Course

On your sandbox in the settings menu click on Export Course (b) (Go to the sandbox > settings > Export Course)

This will bring you to this new menu where you will be able to see all your previous exports. In our case we want to save our current Sandbox as it is so click on course (1) under export type. Then click on create export (2). A bar will appear this indicates the progress of the export.

Once the bar finishes loading a new hyperlink will appear in the export menu called "new export" click on it (3). It will download your course file (4). This file is very important since it contains the course just as you have configured it on Canvas. Notice it has the name of the sandbox. We suggest you go to your file manager and rename it to the course name that you worked on in the Sandbox and save it somewhere safe.
