Elon Account Activation for Students

All Elon students are provided with an Elon Account that grants access to a variety of resources including email, the wireless network, campus computers and more. Early undergraduate admits for the fall semester will receive notification that their Elon Account is ready to be activated by January 5. All other students should receive notification that their account is ready to be activated within 48 hours of enrollment. 

Activating Your Elon Account

During the activation process, you'll be prompted to set a password for your Elon Account and will be taken through steps to enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) via DUO Security. MFA adds an extra level of protection to many of Elon's secure web sites. In addition to your Elon Account username and password, MFA uses your mobile phone, tablet or landline phone to verify your identity.

Once you receive the notification that your Elon Account is ready to be activated, follow these steps:

  1. Log into OnTrack for Applicants 
  2. Locate "Elon University Account Information" under the User Account section
  3. Review the "You Will Need:" section and ensure that you have the items listed nearby
  4. Select "Activate Account" and follow the prompts
    *Please note that the account activation is not complete until you reach the "Activation Complete!" screen. 

Password Creation

The first screen will ask you some verifying information and then prompt you to create your password. Your username, University ID and activation code can be found in OnTrack (as described above). When creating your password, please pay special attention to the password requirements:

  • Your password should be at least eight (8) characters, including at least two (2) numbers, one (1) capital letter and one (1) lowercase letter
  • Your password cannot contain any part of your name, username, initials or previously used passwords

Once you've entered the requested information and the system has verified that your passwords match, choose "Activate Account" to begin the multi-factor enrollment process.

Multi-Factor Authentication Enrollment

The next few screens will lead you through enrolling in DUO Security, Elon's multi-factor authentication platform. Follow each prompt. Note that your account will not be activated until you reach the "Activation Complete!" screen. 

Tips:

  • Mobile Device Recommended: If possible, enroll the device you will carry with you when you arrive on campus. If you do not have your own mobile device, go ahead and complete the enrollment process with what you can currently access (e.g., your parent's phone, a landline phone, etc.). Following enrollment, contact the Technology Service Desk at 336-278-5200 and they'll let you know about alternative options. Don't worry if you plan to get a new phone or other device. The knowledge base includes information about how to change your device or add a new one.
  • Utilize the "72-hr remember me" feature: The 72-hr remember me feature will save you time by remembering your credentials (on the same browser and device) for 72 hours. The easiest way to take advantage of this feature is to choose "Ask me to choose an authentication method" when registering your device. 
    To take advantage of the 24-hr remember me feature, choose "Ask me to choose an authentication method" when prompted on the enrollment screen.
    When prompted to verify your identity using DUO, check the box beside "Remember me for 72 hours"
