ChatGPT 3.5 vs. Microsoft Copilot

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbots that process text to generate responses to aid writing, research, and information processing.

When evaluating the need for an AI chatbot in your work, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the volume of information available. This article discusses two prominent chatbot technologies, ChatGPT 3.5 and Microsoft Copilot Protected (available to all Elon users when they sign-in using their Elon id), including a brief description of each and a comparison of the features of both tools. This information may be revised as updates are made to each tool.

ChatGPT 3.5

ChatGPT 3.5 is a free generative AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that engages in human-like conversations with users. It is built on the GPT-3.5 language model, which is based on the knowledge available up to its last training data in September 2021. ChatGPT Plus, the subscription-based version utilizes the more advanced GPT-4 model, allowing access to real-time information from the web (Brown et al., 2020).

Microsoft Copilot

Formerly known as Bing chat, Microsoft Copilot is a generative AI chatbot developed by Microsoft. The version of Microsoft Copilot included with Elon’s license for all users is powered by GPT-4 providing access to real-time web information and protecting the data entered in the chatbot.

Both chatbots generate conversational responses to prompts, and can be used to help generate ideas, write code, create text, and much more. Additionally, both chatbots can refine generated text based on prompt changes made by the user. This chart compares the features of ChatGPT 3.5 and Elon’s version of Microsoft Copilot.
