Here are some frequently asked questions regarding the Canon printers/copiers.
Why can't I make copies?
- If you are a faculty or staff member and the 'Copy' option is not available when you log into the Canon, you are using a student print station. To make copies, you will need to use your departmental Canon.
How do I set Canon print presets for a Mac?
What happens if I run out of toner?
- Program Assistants are responsible for ordering their own toner for Canon printers/copiers. Campus Technology Support does not keep Canon printer/copier toner in stock. It may take up to 3-5 business days to deliver toner, so make sure you order early!
What should I do with old toner?

Where is the serial number located?
- The serial number for each Canon printer/copier is located on a sticker above the copy plate. Additionally, the serial number may be found by touching the 'Counter Check' button.

Can I print without a Phoenix Card?
- Yes. You should tap the 'AD Login' button on the login screen and enter your Elon email username and password without @elon.edu.
What should I do if the printer/copier says my ID Card is unknown?
- If the Canon printer/copier does not recognize your Phoenix Card, you should enter your Elon email username (without @elon.edu) and password.
What if my Phoenix Card still isn't recognized?
- If your Phoenix Card is not recognized by the system, please contact the Technology Service Desk at 278-5200.
Why doesn't my print job show up in the queue?
- There is a 10-15 second lag from sending a print job to it registering at a Canon printer/copier. If your job does not appear, press the 'Refresh' button on the Canon screen.
Can students use the Canon printer/copier?
- Students are not allowed personal use of departmental Canon printers/copiers. If you have student workers who need to utilize departmental printers/copiers in their role, please contact the Technology Service Desk at 278-5200. If students need to print for personal use, they should use a student print station.
How can I fax from the printer/copier?
- Canon printers/copiers do not come with the ability to fax documents. If you need to scan and fax an item, you must send the item to yourself and fax it from your computer. While this does not require a RightFax number, this does require the Fax Utility. If you do not have the Fax Utility installed on your computer and need it, please contact the Technology Service Desk at 278-5200.
The color quality is irregular. How can I fix this?
- You can recalibrate the machine when you notice irregularities in the color of the copies or prints, such as when copies turn out to be different from the original in gradation, density, or color. To do so, follow the instructions from Canon on how to Auto Adjust Gradation (located as a PDF on the right-hand side of this page underneath the Details section.
Where does the budget code go?
- On Canon printers/copiers, budget codes are known as 'Cost Centers.' Your budget code is pre-configured to your Phoenix Card for printing. If you only have one (1) budget code, you don't need to do anything. If you have multiple budget codes (pictured below), you will be prompted to select the appropriate budget code/Cost Center when logging in.
- If you are a faculty/staff member using a student printing station, the cost of printing will be deducted from your print credits. Note: Checking your balance at a student printing station will show a balance of print credits.
What if my budget code is missing or incorrect?
- If your budget code is missing, incorrect, or you need to add a new one, please contact the Technology Service Desk and request that the budget code be added to your account.
Why can't I change the options for printed documents?
- When printing, you must specify all printing options (e.g., duplex, stapling) from your computer and the program you printed the file from. You may only specify print options from the Canon printer/copier when copying/scanning.
Can you use the Microsoft Edge browser to print a .pdf document to the Canon copier?
- There is a known issue when trying to print .pdf to the Canon when using the new Microsoft Edge browser. You will receive an error regarding the unsupported data type.
I received an email about a meter read. What should I do?
- While most meter reads should be sent to Canon automatically, some users have received emails requesting a meter read. If you receive an email about a meter read, all you have to do is log into your MyCSA - eManage account with your Canon username and password and submit the meter information. To find the meter information, press the Counter Check button on the Canon and provide the listed information.
