Moodle Safe Exam Browser for Students

What is Safe Exam Browser?

Prior to your first Safe Exam Browser (SEB) exam, you will need to download Safe Exam Browser plug-in. Students will only be able to attempt the quiz if they are using SEB. If you do not have a laptop, you can reserve one at Media Services, which is located in Belk Library.

Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is a customized web browser, available for Windows (7, 8.1, 10), macOS (starting 10.7, recommended 10.11 or newer) and iOS (9.3.5 or newer). 

  • Students will only be able to attempt the quiz if they are using Safe Exam Browser.

  • The browser window won't have a URL or search field. Back/forward navigation and reload may also be disabled.

  • Safe Exam Browser cannot be closed until the test is submitted.

Downloading Safe Exam Browser (SEB) on your Personal Computer

  1. Go to the Safe Exam Browser download page

  2. Select the correct download version for your device. SEB. is available for Windows PC, Mac, or iOS. Note: SEB will not work on an Android phone or tablet – you won’t be able to take online tests on these devices.

  3. Locate the download file and double click to start the installation. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. 

  4. When Safe Exam Browser is finished downloading, you will be prompted to read and acknowledge the license agreement. Note: Personal computers will NOT need to download SEB for future quizzes.

  5. Follow the rest of the prompts to complete the installation.

  6. You are now ready to take your exam in Moodle. Log in to Moodle and select the exam you wish to take. 

  7. Click 'Launch Safe Exam Browser' button to begin.

  8. A pop-up window will appear: In the pop-up window choose 'Open Safe Exam Browser'. If you don't see the pop-up window, make sure your web browser has been set to enable pop-ups.

  9. SEB will launch and you will be prompted to enter your Elon username and password to continue. 
     
  10. Next, you will see the 'Attempt Quiz Now' button - click this to start the quiz. 
     
  11. When you are done, click 'Submit All' button for the quiz and then close SEB using the 'Terminate Session' button at the bottom right of the screen. You will be returned to Moodle in your usual browser, 

Launching Safe Exam Browser (SEB) in a Windows Lab or Classroom

Note: You will need to repeat the install process each time you take a quiz that uses SEB.

  1. Locate SEB on AppsAnywhere.elon.edu and click 'Safe Exam Browser' 
     
  2. You will receive a prompt letting you know that "Safe Exam Browser installed successfully. Please sign into Moodle to access your quiz".  Click 'OK' to continue to Moodle.

  3. Continue with steps 5 - 10 above.

Downloading Safe Exam Browser (SEB) in the Classroom for Mac

Note: You will need to repeat the install process each time you take a quiz that uses SEB.

  1. Locate SEB in Apps Anywhere and click 'Visit Website
     
  2. Select the correct install for your device.

  3. Follow the prompts to install. 
     
  4. Once the installation is complete, you are now ready to sign in to Moodle and access your quiz.
     
  5. Click 'Launch Safe Exam Browser' button to begin.
