Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is a specialized browser built right into the Moodle ecosystem. SEB allows instructors to prevent students from leaving Moodle while taking a Moodle quiz.
To use SEB, instructors must enable SEB within the Moodle quiz settings, and students must download the browser prior to running it on their device. While the default configuration of SEB within a Moodle quiz works for most devices, it is likely that there will be students within a section of a course who can not run the browser on their device. We recommend this workflow when using SEB for the first time in a class to ensure using the tool runs as smoothly as possible.
Step 1: Create your quiz and enable Safe Exam Browser
- Create your Moodle quiz. DO NOT enable SEB in the quiz settings.
- Once you have created your quiz, create a duplicate by clicking the three dots next to the activity in the main course area.

- Hide the duplicate from students.
- In the original copy of your Moodle quiz, configure SEB as follows:
- Select "Yes-Configure manually" from the "Require the use of Safe Exam Browser."
- There is no need to change any of the default settings unless you'd like to customize the browser experience for students.

- DO NOT enable SEB in your duplicate quiz.
Step 2: Create a practice quiz using Safe Exam Browser
- Create a practice Moodle quiz with a few fun or low-stakes questions. Enable SEB within this practice quiz. Plan to give this to your students a class or two prior to your scheduled Moodle quiz.
- On the day of the practice quiz, walk through the steps of opening up the quiz and downloading SEB with your students.
- Have students complete the practice quiz. If a student's device can not execute SEB properly, they will get an error message. Collect the names of these students, and place them in their own group in Moodle.
- Restrict access on your duplicate quiz for students who can not use SEB,

- On the day of your test, students who were able to download SEB on their devices can complete the SEB enabled quiz, and those who were not able to download it can take the duplicate quiz (no SEB configured).
