Citrix App Protection Prevents Installation/Upgrade

Tags citrix

If you're trying to install or update Citrix Workspace and get an error message dialog beginning "Unable to Stop the ctxapinject driver services." these steps worked for me to get past it:

  1. Download the current version of the installer from https://www.citrix.com/downloads/workspace-app/windows/workspace-app-for-windows-latest.html .   You may use either the standard or the "Offline installer", but the offline installer is usually not necessary and the steps in this section have only been validated on the standard installer.
  2. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator, change to the Downloads directory.
  3. sc delete appprotectionsvc
    1. For older versions it's entryprotectsvc

    2. In Services as "AppProtection Service"

  4. sc delete ctxapinject

    1. Does not appear in Services

  5. CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /uninstall
  6. Reboot
  7. CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /CleanInstall
    1. You might see an "Installation failed." message box, more than once, just OK it and the progress bar should continue and complete.
  8. In the tool tray in the lower right corner of your Windows screen, locate the Citrix Workspace app:
  9. Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)Right-click, choose Advanced Preferences from the context menu, and Reset Citrix Workspace.
  10. Sign into Blackbaud.  In Database options, use the Terminate session and Reset user profile buttons.
  11. Use Hosted files to launch that application, verify it works, close it.
  12. Use Open database view to launch that application and verify it works.
