How to Make Groups in Moodle

1.) In the Administration block, click on 'Users' (1) and then 'Groups' (2)

2.) Select 'Create groups' if you would like to create groups manually; select 'Auto-create groups' if you would like Moodle to randomly generate groups for you

3.) If you selected 'Create group', enter the general information for your group

  1. Enter a name for your group.
    1. All other information is optional.
  2. Click "Save changes."

4.) If you selected 'Auto-create groups', enter in the information for Moodle to create groups for you

  1. The at symbol (@) may be used to create groups with names containing letters. For example Group @ will generate groups named Group A, Group B, Group C, ...
    1. The hash symbol (#) may be used to create groups with names containing numbers. For example Group # will generate groups named Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, ...
  2. Decide if you would like the groups created based on the number of groups or the amount of members per group.
  3. Indicate the amount of groups to be created or the amount of members that should be in each group.
  4. Select which members of the course should be in the groups; students, teachers, or both.
  5. Click the "Submit" button.
  • Moodle will then automatically create groups for you based on your above criteria.
