  1. Select 'Essay' as the question type to add.
  2. Click the 'Add' button.

2.) Enter the General information for the essay question

  1. Category: Select the category you would like the essay question to go into.
  2. Question name: Give the essay question a descriptive name. You will use the name to track your questions later so "Question 1" is not a good idea. The name will be used in the question lists on the quiz editing page or in the lesson as a page title. It will not be shown to the students, so you can choose any name that makes sense to you and possibly other teachers.
  3. Question text: Create the question text.
  4. Default points: Set the default question mark (grade).
  5. General feedback: If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after he/she has answered the question, if you select immediate feedback.

3.) Enter the remainder of the General information for the essay question

  2. Require text: Choose between requiring students to type text in the response box or having it be optional.
  3. Input box size: Decide how many lines you would like students to see in their text box. This is used to indicate the length of the answer expected. This box will get larger, if needed, as students are typing their response.
  4. Allow attachments: Select if you would like students to add attachments with their answer.
  5. Response template: Any text entered here will be displayed in the response input box when a new attempt at the question starts.
  6. Information for graders: Add information for graders, as appropriate.

4.) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'Save changes' button
