Optional Quiz Lesson - Multiple Choice Questions in Moodle

Please note, only the areas with a red exclamation marks are required. All other areas are optional.

1.) In the 'Choose a question type to add' window, choose 'Multiple choice' (1) and click 'Add' (2)

2.) Enter the General information for the multiple choice question

  1. Category: Select the category you would like the multiple choice question to go in.
  2. Question name: Give the multiple choice question a descriptive name. You'll use the name to track your questions later so "Question 1" isn't a good idea. The name will be used in the question lists on the quiz editing page or in the lesson as a page title. It will not be shown to the students, so you can choose any name that makes sense to you and possibly other teachers.
  3. Question text: Create the question text.
  4. Default points: Set the default question mark (grade).

3.) Enter the General information for the multiple choice question

  1. General feedback: If you wish, add general feedback. This is text that appears to the student after they have answered the question.
  2. One or multiple answers: Choose whether students can only select one answer or multiple answers.
  3. Shuffle choices: Choose whether to shuffle the answer options.
  4. Number the choices: You can select here how you want the choices to be numbered for your students.

4.) Enter the answers information for the multiple choice question

  1. Choice 1: For multiple choice questions, you must give at least two choices for students to choose from. Enter the possible answer here.
  2. Grade: Using the drop down, choose how much this answer is worth. If it is the only answer, you should set this to 100%. If it is completely wrong, you should set it to None. If it is partially correct, you can choose what percentage to associate with this choice.
  3. Feedback: If you wish, you can give feedback with this choice. This text will appear to the student after he/she has answered the question.

5.) By default, Moodle gives five choices to enter for students to choose from, and if you want more than five, select the button 'Blanks for 3 more choices'

6.) Enter Combined feedback for the multiple choice question (optional)

  1. For any correct response: If you wish, you can enter feedback for any correct response.
  2. For any partially correct response: If you wish, you can enter feedback for any partially correct response, if applicable in your multiple choice question.
  3. Options: If you check this box, the number of correct responses with show to the students once the question has finished.
  4. For any incorrect response: If you wish, you can enter feedback for any incorrect response.

7.) Enter the settings for multiple tries

  • When you run your questions using the 'Interactive with multiple tries' or 'Adaptive mode' behavior, so that the the student will have several tries to get the question right, then this option controls how much they are penalized for each incorrect try.
  • The penalty is a proportion of the total question grade, so if the question is worth three marks, and the penalty is 0.3333333, then the student will score 3 if they get the question right first time, 2 if they get it right second try, and 1 of they get it right on the third try.

8.) Enter the Hint information for the multiple choice question (optional)

  1. Hint 1: Enter the text you want students to see when they ask for a hint.
  2. Hint 1 options: Select the options for the hint.
  3. Add another hint: If you need more than two (2) hints for your multiple choice question, select this button.

9.) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'Save changes' button

  • You have now successfully added a multiple choice question to your Quiz in Moodle!
