DUO & AnyConnect for Colleague VPN Access - Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of frequently asked questions regarding DUO Security and the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client for Colleague VPN access.

Who uses DUO and AnyConnect?

  • Faculty and staff who require VPN access for Colleague. This is not for general use by students.

How do I access Colleague remotely?

  • Follow the instructions to Set Up VPN for Colleague

Why do I need DUO Security?

  • Passwords are becoming increasingly easy to compromise. They are often stolen, guessed and hacked, and you may not know that someone else has your password and is accessing your account. MFA using DUO Security adds a second layer of security to your account to ensure that your data and information stays safe, even if someone else knows your password. You will be alerted right away via your chosen device(s) if someone knows your password and tries to login with it.

What do I put in for the "Second Password"?

  • You will type one of the following in the "Second Password" field:
    • Push - If you have enrolled your smartphone in the DUO system, you will receive a notification from the DUO Mobile App.
    • SMS - If you have enrolled your phone to receive text messages from the DUO system.
    • Phone - If you have enrolled a landline or smartphone to receive phone calls from DUO. If multiple phones are enrolled, you may need to designate which one (i.e. phone1 or phone2). You will receive a phone call to confirm login.
    • Key Fob - If you have a DUO Key Fob, you will press the white button on the key fob to receive a combination of numbers. Those numbers will be the second password.
    • Bypass Code - If you have enrolled your smartphone in the DUO system, you can enter the 6 digit code provided by the app.

Why am I not receiving notifications from the DUO Mobile App?

  • The most common reason you aren't seeing a notification from the DUO Mobile App is that you have notifications disabled on your phone. Your options are as follows:
    • Manually open the DUO Mobile App
    • Enable notifications on your phone (varies by device)

What if I forgot my mobile phone?

  • If you forgot your mobile phone and it is the only configured device for MFA, you will be unable to access web applications using DUO. It is recommended that you also configure your office landline phone as an option on the Duo Enrollment Site.

What if I lost my university-owned mobile phone?

  • If you have lost your university-owned mobile phone, contact the Technology Service Desk immediately using the self-service portal or by phone at (336) 278-5200.

What if I do not have a mobile phone?

  • You can use your office landline phone to access DUO Security. DUO also lets you link multiple phones to your account (e.g. your mobile and office landline phones), which is recommended.

What if I receive a new phone?

  • As long as the number has not changed, no action is required. If you have a new phone number, you will need to enroll it on the DUO Enrollment site.
  • Additionally, you will need to re-install the DUO Mobile App from the appropriate app store on your device.

How many chances do I have to re-authenticate?

  • You will have five chances to re-authenticate. After the fifth chance, your MFA will be deactivated and you will not be able to access single sign on web applications using DUO Security. Please contact the Technology Service Desk at (336) 278-5200 for further support.

How are updates handled for AnyConnect?

  • The AnyConnect client will update automatically. If available, AnyConnect will automatically update following MFA. Once the update completes, you will be connected to the VPN.

Why can't I log in at gold.elon.edu?

  • If you use a web browser to access gold.elon.edu, you will be unable to login to AnyConnect. You must use the AnyConnect client to access VPN.
