Import (Copy) Content from Previous Courses in Moodle

Remember those great documents and activities you made last semester? You do not have to recreate them each time you get a new Moodle course shell. Moodle has a great import feature for copying your content from those older courses and it handles files and folders, topics, assignments, forums, quizzes, and even your Grader Report setup. It is simple to use. View the tutorial or follow the directions below to import content from a previous course in Moodle. For information beyond this article, please see Moodle documentation here.

1. Navigate to the course you would like to import content to.

  • For example, if you would like to import content to a course for Fall 2023, go to that Fall '23 course shell. In that course, select the drop-down menu "More" and click "Course reuse".

2. You will be directed to the page for importing content. Select the course you want to import content from. You can also use the search bar located below the course listings to find the one you are looking for. Click "Continue" when you are ready.

  • Please note: This page will only display courses you are currently enrolled in as the instructor.
  • If the course you are looking for does not appear in the list, use the search bar and button to search for the course. We recommend keeping search terms simple (e.g. "BUS2010" instead of "Gateway to Business Spring of 2019").

3. The next page is for importing course settings. Click "Next" at the bottom of the page when you are ready.

  • Most of these are selected by default, and in most cases we recommend leaving them selected.
  • If you find this page confusing, remember that all these settings can be edited any time after the import.

4. The following page is on schema settings, which determines what material is imported into your course. Select/deselect content as needed, and then click "Next" at the bottom of the page.

  • If you're not copying over entire topics, deselect that topic instead of all the content inside it (this will save a few clicks).
  • Again, this can all be edited after the import.

5. The final page before the import will ask you to review the settings and content included in your import. Click "Perform import" at the bottom of the page when you are ready.

7. Your import will now be performed.

  • If the previous course contains a lot of data, this import make take a few minutes. You will be notified from that same page when the import is complete, at which point settings and content as you have configured them will appear in the course shell.
